Sick Boy

Artist's comments: They say that "A rose by any other

name would smell as sweet".  But my question to you is,

does this also apply to bears? Usually bears have cute,

exotic or human names - everything from Ted to Fred,

Cappucino to Caesar has been used as a bear name by

some bear artist.  But, would you still like a bear that

didn't have an attractive name?  This bear is called Sick

Boy, after the character from the book and film Trainspotting.

This is not a name that I personally would have chosen,

but sometimes you don't get any options...sometimes

a newly-brewed bear just looks at you and says, "This

is my name,  get used to it!" I feel that this bear has

definitely gone above and beyond the boundaries of "normal"

names for bears!  Now, ask yourself...can you see past an

unattractive name and find the bear that "bears" it, might be

appealing?  Can Sick Boy smell as sweet as Ted or Cappucino?

15cm/6" tall, hand-dyed Schulte mohair, olive green glass

eyes, leather eyelids, randomly embroidered nose, fully

cotterpin jointed, polyfil and steel shot stuffed.

Ichi (means One in Japanese)

Artist's comments: I finally decided to try an Anime bear.

Thought it was a good name since she is the first one I did

amd her name means One in Japanese.  Peach sparse mohair,

wool felt paw and foot pads, German glass eyes with white

surrounds/  Peach bows at her ears and around her neck,

polyfilled with lots of glass beads, 11" tall  with most of it

in her head!

27.

Suzikyu

Artist's comments: The name Suzikyu doesn't mean

anything in Japanese, as far as I know, and if it does,

it's purely coincidental! Suzikyu was named after her

creator, who, while given the same of Susan, has fond

memories of being called Suzie-Q as a child.   7" tall,

Suzikyu is a fashionable and trendy preteen sort of beary

beauty.  She dresses in the latest styles including mini

skirts and midriff-baring tops.  She loves her comfy little

ballet flats with the pretty flowers.  Her roomy bag can

hold all the necessities a busy little girl-bear might need.

Suzikyu was designed after the Japanese style, but with

modifications that include longer arms and legs.  She and

her clothes were crocheted from high-quality Angora mohair,

and her shoes are cotton chenille.  She has black glass eyes,

embroidered and shaded features, cotter-pin and disk-jointed

head, arms, and legs.

Akina

Artist's comments: I found a small fabric scrap one of my mom's

60's dresses.  I was tempted by the unusual combination of bright

orange, hot pink, green and white. I played with it, combining vintage

orange rayon and a peaches-and-cream long pile fabric.  This is a very

unusual piece for me, for many reasons. I didn't have a specific idea

n mind when I started and that was probably a limit in designing the

bear, but gave me a lot more freedom to experiment. So I tried new

things, such as eyelids and painted eyes. The colors are also unusual,

becouse normally, I'm more attracted to earth and blue tones.  Made

with peaches-and-cream long pile fabric and bright orange vintage

rayon. She's built over a wire armature. Brown glass bead eyes with

eyelids, partially painted. Vintage cotton dress with glass beads,

crocheted scarf and flower accents.  She's only 5,5 cm high.

Sabreena

Sits 2.75" high at the ear, firmly needle felted from Merino/Zephyr

blend roving making her soft as a kitten (surprise), then fluffed

slightly to make her a little fuzzy.  Beautiful black German glass

eyes which sit under her lovely pink polymer clay nose making

her a Japanese Anime style siamese kitten. Detailing done strictly

by needlefelting except that for hand shading on accent areas such

as eyes and nose bridge.  Jointed head can be posed however you

like! Everything else has been felted into position.  Weighted in her

tummy to make her feel like she just had a big bowl of milk and

best of all - she has no claws to use on your furniture!  Sabreena

can be a bit mischievious!

32.

Fizgig

Needle felted from dark blue New Zealand Corriedale Wool

with a fabric body, fabric covered button nose matches his

body which is filled with glass beads. Disk jointed neck,

thread jointed limbs, big blue and brown 'real' eyes, hair

fluffed in a crazy, oddball way.  Fizgig has felted yuk, yuk

teeth, happy smile, plaid neck tie, measures 4" tall.

Greenpeace

A very calm character, he enjoys surfing, hanging out,

eating pizza and being nice to people.  Greenpeace has

an extraordinarily large head, which required some cunning

to attach to his tiny body.  He is styled somewhat like

a "standard" anime bear, but the "big head/small body"

concept has been pushed to the limit.  The addition of

eyelids gives him a more focused and "human" gaze

than is generally found in anime bears.  Greenpeace

also features a unique nose in my signature woven

pattern for that extra touch of individuality.  15cm/6"

tall, hand dyed Schulte mohair, upholstery velvet inner

ears, amber glass eyes, leather eyelids, fully cotterpin

jointed, stuffed with polyfil and steel shot.

34.

Agnes

Artist's comments: This piece originated with some white fabric that

was perfect for a lamb and the little rubber shoes perfect for a girl.

It was a nice challenge to combine a crocheted muzzle with a fabric

head and to work with a wire armature, similar to what I use on cloth

dolls.  Agnes is made with cotton nubby fabric and has crocheted limbs,

ears and muzzle.  She's built over a wire armature, sod is fully posable.

Brown glass bead eyes, rubber blue shoes and felt dress. She's 7 cm tall.

36.

Little Pink

5.9" tall, unusually coloured bear with very non-traditional

look.  As such, she feels herself to be a bit of an outcast and

doesn't quite fit in with most of the other bears.  Her heroine

is the pop singer Pink, who not only has the same name but

is also a thoroughly modern girl!15cm standing, hand dyed

Schulte mohair, ultra suede inner ears, glass eyes, randomly

embroidered multicoloured nose, fully cotterpin jointed, polyfil

and steel shot stuffed.

combination of excelsior and glass pellets for added weight.  Look

completed with a clown hat and light green bow around his neckm

matching pom pom on top of his hat.  Bow and hat accented with

Sachi is 16" tall (not including his WIRED ears). He has been created out of

43.

Kau'i (pronounced. 'kah ooh ee')

Artist's comments: Kau'i measures 3" tall and her name means

"The Beauty" in Hawaiian.  Kau'is beauty comes from her happy

smile and friendly spirit!  She was inspired by the love that many

of my beary friends have of the colour Purple. Her happy spirit

reflects the love generated by a group of very special friends

who make being part of the world of Japanese bearies a joy!

Kau'i is crocheted from lavender crochet cotton with her little

feetsies made from glass pearly beads.  Her nose is a fabric

covered button glossed for a shiny, glassy look.  Kau'i has

glass eyes and is fully thread jointed.  She is filled with lots

of love and wool, is blushed and pigment shaded for loveliness

and wears a big light purple organza bow atop her big teddy head.
