The Journey Beyond...

Reaching Outside the Box!

We bestow upon you, our readers, as collectors and enthusiasts,

the privilege to choose the artist you believe, has ventured beyond

where others have dared to tread, blazing trails to the next age of fine

bear art, knowing the path less traveled can become the road to follow!

You will vote for the ONE creation per category, which you believe

possesses the indefinable quality to free you and others, from earthly

ties - the piece that cries out for recognition - pulling at your heartstrings

while revealing hidden aspects of the artist who created it.

URSA is not just another name for bear or a constellation, URSA is an

acronym for the criteria, by which we ask readers to judge  each entry:

Unparalleled Beauty

Artistic Merit & Craftsmanship

1.

Guilty

Artist's comments: 3.5" long from nose to butt and firmly

needle felted in one piece (not jointed), from different "scruffy"

needlefelting wools.  Guilty has a sculpted look that delineates

all his muscles and joints.  Guilt has his own little basket

bed with a nice plaid blanket to provide him with a warm

and cozy refuge.

2.

It Must "Bee" Spring!
Artist's comments: This big guy, at least big for me, when it

comes to needlefelting is 5.75 inches tall while sitting down.

Completely needle felted, the flower iuncluded except for fimo

nose and onyx bead eyes. The little bees are stick pins.

Just Another MJ Bear

3.

Bonsai

A fiery little 3" tall, Japanese Anime bear.  Firmly needle felted

from honey-colored mohair.  Bonsai has also been shaded to

enhance her intense black eyes and her predominant nose.

5-way string jointed and detailed from head to toe.

4.

Jack

Needlefelted Miniature Schnauzer (uncropped ears).

made from light natural Icelandic wool (Local Maine fiber)

and marked with a natural black babydoll (Local Maine fiber)

and white New Zealand Merino. Stands just under 4" high

from toe to top of head.  Armature jointed legs, with wire

extending from one leg, through the body and down the

other leg, with no seperation so they move and look just

like real legs! Black cotton embroidered nose, black onyx

stone eyes, and hand trimmed beard, make him show ready!

5.

Weebeau, Bearly Swimming

Artist's comments: Weebeau, a silvery gray colored Polar Bear,

LOVES nothing better than to relax in the warm water and soak

up some sun.  Needled felted from 100% wool, he is a rascally

guy that might splash you if you wander too close to the water's

edge.  He may try to look innocent but those dark onyx eyes

hold a merry twinkle that convey his true intentions!

6.

Obadele

 5-1/2" tall, Obadele's (pronounced aw-bah-deh-leh)

is king of the jungle, albeit a handsome version (as he

is apt to tell you), and has the crown to prove it! He is

needle felted from hand dyed New Zealand Corriedale

wool, hand colored with pigment inks, possessing ight

blue 'real' eyes, curly auburn mane, fully thread jointed.

7.

Midnight Pegasus

Artist's comments: Pegusus-themed creations are normally

white in colour.  I wanted to go the opposite direction, especially

since I also created a white Pegasus.  Midnight is all the colours

of midnight with hues of red-black, blue-black and golds.  All the

colours are hand dyed Merino and mohair wools.  Hooves and

unicorn horn are made from polymer clay.  Midnight's magnificent

wings are polymer clay, accented with 18 karat gold leaf pen.  He

stands tall at a whopping 11" high to the tip of his wings.

8.

Rosie, the Pot Bellied Pig
Artist's comments: Rosie was a challenge considering I've never

even met a pig.  I wondered whether I could capture her personality

and make her appealing.  Rosie is about 3" tall standing, softly

felted from variety of natural wools. hand applied and styled roving

white top knot and tail tassel.  Special attention given to body

posture and facial expression, wire armatured for gentle posing,

black onyx eyes, hand shaded pastel and watercolor detailing,

wears red ribbon halter and leash.

9.

Ting-a-Ling, The Take Out Genie

Artist's comments: Hot and Sour Soup, Sesame Chicken, Egg

Roll? Your wish is his command.  Opening up a box of Twin Cubs

Take Out can result in the release of the famous Take Out Genie,

Ting-a-Ling. This magical fellow is about 10" tall, including his

handmade Take Out box.  He is needle felted of cream wool and

luxurious chocolate alpaca roving.  He is suitably dressed in a

beautiful chocolate oriental print accented with appropriate hat

made out of wool felt. Your wish is his command!

10.

INAMUIOTT

Artist's comments: As much as that looks like a 'native American'

word, it really stands for "It's Not A Meal Until It's On The Table".

The title is a take-off on a famous Charles Russell work - It's Not Meat

Until It's On The Table... which sounded a mite too blood-thirsty.

Very firmly needle felted in Rambouillet/Merino, Cormo and

Romney wools, composition nose, onyx eyes, hand-crafted

horsehair claws, polymer tusks. Polar Bear is 2.75" long

x 1.50" high. Walrus is .75" long.

11.

Troubi

A mischievous little guy, fond of naturally tasty sweets,

his cheerfulness is like springtime days, fresh and delicious.

His red isn't the sign of anger,

rather, the drunkenness of flavoursome ripened fruits,

He stuffs himself, almost exploding

with flavoursome fruit juices and pulps!

This weakness renders him enchanting,

irrestible to love and hug to one's heart's content!

12.

Priscilla Purrrrl

Pretty Priscilla, lean and lank, is 13" tall with a completely and

very firmly needle felted firmly body that is also armature to allow

for lots of primping and posing! Her beautiful lavendar dress is

covered in seed beads as is the bow in her hair.  She has suede

high heels, handpainted blue eyes with human hair eyelashes

for an ultra flirty look!

13.

Cleocatra

Artist's comments: All of my creatures are entirely made of wool.

Generally, I use a base wool of Navajo Churro and build color

over that base.  She is a full bodied tiger who likes to sit up high

and look down upon her world.  She looks more "furoucious" than

she really is.  Cleocatra is a very curious girl, always soft paw

and plays gently with her friends.  She is needle felted with base

of Navajo Churro sheep, the orange is dyed mohair with black Merino

stripes.  Her white parts are Rambouillet/Finn cross sheep. Her

eyes made of wool with just a little Angelina to add sparkle. 16"

long and approximatley 8" tall, excluding her tail.

Linda Martin

Martin's Magical Menagerie

14.

Ember

Artist's comments: I design my one of a kind needle felted

creations from start to finish.  Ember is my second piece

in my new Fantasy Felts series.  9" tall from the bottom

of his feet to the top of his head. His entire body is hand

"sculpted" from wool roving.  S haded to add more depth

and delineation of features.  Handmade wings, imported,

hand blown glass eyes.

15.

De-Ji (means Daisy in Japanese)

Tiny 2-1/4" tall firmly needle felted Anime-style teddy bear which

is a new style yet somehow, she also has a vintage look from the

shape of her longer legs.  Glass eyes and nose, red felt tongue,

crocheted Daisy flower head accent, vintage lace collar and flower.

Linda Haydu

Original Felted Folksies

16.

Petunia

3" tall, Petunia has the fluffiest tail created from Merino

and Ingeo roving (just like the rest of her)! Features beautiful

bright blue German glass eyes, very detailed and hand shaded

paw pads, 5 way jointed and can be posed however you like -

even standing, weighted in her tummy to make her hefty and

loveable. Best of all, unlike a real skunk, she smells very nice!

Felted Bear, The

17.

Lepricat & Goldie, the Goldfish

Artist's comments: While most think Leprecauns are short

elves, there are in fact Lepricats! They love everything gold,

even goldFISH.  This little duo has been together for some

time and are quite fond of each other.  The strange Lepricat

is solid core sculpture, needle felted from 100% wool felt.

Accented with hand embroidered cotton floss clovers. Sitting

at just under 3" tall, he has pointy tufts on his ears and

a cute little goatie to add to his charm.  1-1/2" tall and 2”

long, Goldie’s fins and body are hand crocheted from bright

yellow/gold acrylic thread.  He is slightly sculpted to add

that goldfishy hump on his back, which he likes to show off

as he swims about in his blue glass bowl! Goldie closely

resembles an Oranda goldfish.  Both sport bright black

onyx eyes and extra shading in blue, for added effect.

18.

Elise the Elephant & her baby,
Artist's comments: I was inspired to create Elise & Baby

for two reasons.  I love the tiny vulnerability of a baby

elephant and also appreciate the caring, almost human,

feelings elephants seem to share throughout their lives.
Elise is about 6" tall, wire armatured for gentle posing.

Both are softly felted from natural wools with longer

Roving topcoat.  Special attention is given to their body

posture, interaction and facial expressions.  Both have

black onyx eyes and individually felted toenails. Hand

shaded pastel and watercolor detail.  Baby is felted

separately and permanently attached to her mother.

19.

Sleepy, Teddy Boy

Artist's comments: He began with a sketch that soon evolved

into that very Sleepy Boy you see in the pictures. His eyes

show all the emotion of that young child who stays up way

past his/her bed time.  I think we've all seen the Image

of a wee one, wondering down the hall, clutching their teddy

and dragging their blanket.  My own 2-year old son was my

inspiration  for Sleepy when he came to see me as I was

felting this bear. He stood there, rubbing his eyes and clutching

his teddy.  Sleepy was made with a cloth body then needle felted

with beige coloured Merino wool accented with two kinds of blue

for his eyes and brown for his feet.  5-way thread jointed with

a slip knot neck so his head tilts just right.

20.

Sky

This precious little, 3" tall, Flutter Bug is needle felted from hand

dyed turqoise blue New Zealand Corriedale wool. She is thread

jointed, hand made paper wings, turqoise-colored realistic eyes,

wired antennae with beads, blue gem accents, thread and faceted

bead leggies.
